Project Leader of Proteus, a hybrid reasoning and representation system: frames with inheritance, forward and backward chaining rules, a truth maintenance system and dependency-directed backtracking with fix rules. Version 1 shipped as MCC document AI/TR-0101-05 in 1985; David Russinoff was principal architect and Donald Steiner the third original member. - 1986: M.S. in Computer Science, UT Austin. Master's thesis: New Algorithms for Dependency-Directed Backtracking. The next year his AAAI-87 paper revised dependency-directed backtracking for default reasoning. - 1989: The first MCC technology in a product. NCR's Design Advisor, an integrated-circuit design critic built on Proteus and presented at IAAI-89, became the first commercial product based on MCC technology. Petrie later became the subject of the case study Technology Transfer and MCC in R&D Collaboration on Trial (Harvard Business School Press, 1994). - 1991: Ph.D. in Computer Science, UT Austin. Dissertation: Planning and Replanning with Reason Maintenance, advised by Prof. Robert Simmons. At CDR he implemented Redux', a process-coordination server that became the basis of ProcessLink, an agent-based framework for coordinating engineering design tools, first applied to aircraft electrical cable design. In April 1994 MCC filed his patent (5,509,071, with Wayne Allen) on using cryptography to guarantee delivery of software over the Internet. - 1996: Asked to start an Internet magazine. Ted Lewis approached him in early 1996 about a new IEEE Computer Society magazine about the Internet. The first editorial board met in the third quarter of 1996, against naysayers who thought ATM would replace packet switching and a press office that wanted the title Edgeware. Magazines mostly were not on the Web then and the Society had no digital library. He converted every article by hand into HTML and posted it on the Society's server, and wrote later that he was not going to start a magazine called Internet Computing that was not available online. It was the first Computer Society magazine online, and it is still published today. Petrie's technical thread from 1984 onward is reason maintenance: keeping track of why a system believes what it believes, so that when something changes, only the dependent conclusions have to be revisited. His master's thesis was New Algorithms for Dependency-Directed Backtracking; his AAAI-87 paper revised dependency-directed backtracking for default reasoning; his dissertation was Planning and Replanning with Reason Maintenance. Proteus, the MCC project he led, combined frames with inheritance, forward and backward chaining rules, a truth maintenance system and dependency-directed backtracking with fix rules into one expert-system shell. NCR built its Design Advisor, an integrated-circuit design critic, on it, and that became the first commercial product based on MCC technology. Redux, described in his 1990 MCC report and the 2012 Springer book, is what he called goal, operator-oriented programming. Computation starts with goals. An operator applied to a goal is a decision that produces assignments or subgoals. Assignments can violate constraints, and a violation can only be resolved by rejecting one or more of the decisions that support it, which dependency-directed backtracking identifies. Decisions carry contingencies, so when the world changes the decisions that depended on it become invalid and their goals reopen. It is a model of design, planning and replanning that keeps the reasons. The airport years used the same vocabulary. IEEE Spectrum quoted his rule for a project where everything hangs on everything else: you don't have a plan, you have dependencies. At Stanford's Center for Design Research, from 1993, he applied Redux to concurrent engineering: many designers, many tools, one evolving design. Redux' was the process-coordination server; ProcessLink was the agent-based framework around it for coordinating heterogeneous design tools. The first application was the design of aircraft electrical cable systems, and there was a Toshiba consumer-electronics project. The work was part of MADEFAST, a DARPA experiment in distributed engineering with Larry Leifer and Mark Cutkosky. The infrastructure result was JATLite, a Java agent infrastructure with message routing, published in IEEE Internet Computing in 2000. His 1996 IEEE Expert article, Agent-Based Engineering, the Web, and Intelligence, and his PAAM 2000 talk on agent-based software engineering set out the position: agents were a way to build engineering systems out of independent tools that exchange messages and share a model of the design, so that a change in one place propagates to the people it affects. By 2003 the vocabulary was web services. His survey with Christoph Bussler, Service Agents and Virtual Enterprises, framed the question that occupied his Logic Group years: how to compose services from different companies into a temporary, dynamic enterprise, with the semantics needed to do it automatically. When Ted Lewis approached him in early 1996 about a magazine on the Internet, the Internet was not well understood even inside the IEEE Computer Society. In his own telling, prominent naysayers predicted ATM would replace packet switching, interactive TV was being pushed, and the press office wanted the magazine called Edgeware. The Society had no digital library. So he converted every article by hand into HTML and posted it on the Society's server, along with interviews with Bob Metcalfe, Eric Schmidt, Len Kleinrock, Robert Cailliau and George Gilder. It was the first Computer Society magazine online, and it was free. When the Society later started a digital library and, without consulting the editorial board, pointed the magazine's URL at the paywalled version, he complained. The reply, he wrote, was that it was just a URL. His first column in January 1997 asked whether the Internet was the CB radio of the 90s or the Los Angeles of the 40s: an urban frontier where anyone could make something new and fine. He predicted it would go the way of electric motors and microprocessors, so embedded in our lives that we would not notice it. His Peering column, which he wrote and edited from 2005 to 2017, kept the provocative register: Is Google Evil?, Will the Web Vanish?, The Internet vs The State, Protect Data, Not Algorithms. His research topic in the Logic Group years was what he called collective work: the use of web services to create and support virtual enterprises with dynamic service integration. The public version was the World Wide Wizard, described by Stanford News in 2007: software that lets computers negotiate with each other over the Internet to complete tasks that now take human effort, watching for changes and working out what has to happen next. The POEM project with SAP, Policy-Oriented Enterprise Management, was the research vehicle. In 2010, at the first Future Enterprise Systems workshop in Berlin, he put it as a thesis. Web 2.0 made publishing democratic. Web services could make processes democratic and just-in-time: given a goal, a process could be composed on the spot from services, respecting the enterprise's stated policies, and changed when contingencies arise. The universe does not run on workflow, he wrote, so why should enterprises? The radical step was the Coordinated Internet: a network that actively watches what people do, correlates their activities, and notifies the right people and programs when their current task affects, or is affected by, someone else's. Conflicts, safe options, synergies, and tasks that are no longer necessary. The trick, he added, is to do it without being a big-brother paper clip. Emergent collectives was his name for the spontaneous cooperation structures the Internet makes possible, from open source to disaster relief; his TEDxUHowest talk in 2012 was on the technology of emergent collectives for disaster relief, and his 2016 column revisited the idea for the sharing economy. His bio describes it as, for a few days, approximately the 68th busiest airport in the United States, and also a second gate into the event, running a box office, gate, greeting, ramp security and general office functions. He first went to Burning Man in 1998 and joined founder Lissa Shoun when the airport was established in 1999. Dr. Petrie has been often asked to write and speak on Internet futures. He edited and wrote the Peering column of Internet Computer. He has been a contributor to The Economist. In 2012, he was a Guest Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of St. Gallen (HSG). He continued as a Sr. Research Scientist at HSG until 2016. In addition, until 2017, he was the Operations Manager for the Black Rock Municipal Airport, managing about 300 volunteers. The BRMA, in addition to being a busy airport (approximately 68th in the US for a few days), is also a 2nd gate into the event, running box office, gate, greeting, perimeter/ramp security, and general office functions. He initiated the first airport organization, the Ministry of Customs, and, with other founding volunteers, the first manuals defining the functions of airport roles. The first application was a distributed system for the design of aircraft electrical cable systems. The project was design of consumer electronics for Toshiba. From April, 1984, until September, 1993, Dr. Petrie was Senior Member, Technical Staff, at the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation ([ MCC](http://www.mcc.com/)). He was the first person hired by Professor Woody Bledsoe for the AI Lab there, worked for Dr. Elaine Rich, and led the [Proteus Project](https://charlespetrie.com/classic/proteus/), which developed an advanced hybrid reasoning system and was the first technology to be used commercially by MCC shareholders. MCC Proteus Project Proteus was a hybrid reasoning and representation project at Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC). It started in the AI Lab directed by Woody Bledsoe. Charles Petrie was the official Project Leader, and specialized in Dependency-Directed Backtracking. David Russinoff was the principal architect. Donald Steiner was the other original member of the project who contributed initial ideas, the user interface, integration of systems, and general systems testing, debugging, and improvements. The first version was released as MCC Document MCC/AI/TR-0101-05 in 19851. In later years, the project was led by Elaine Rich. Other members of the project at various later times include Michael Huhns, Nathanial Ballou, Vasant Dhar, Natraj Arni, Michael Gray, David Bridgeland, James Christian, James Shea, MunindarSingh, William Schelter, and Shiuh-li Liuh. The project is reviewed as a case study in Chapter 5 of R&D Collaboration on Trial by David V. Gibson and Everett M. Rogers (c)1994. The project produced an advanced expert system shell that combined frames with inheritance, forward and backward chaining rules, an advanced Truth Maintenance System2, and Dependency-Directed Backtracking with fix rules3 that led to Redux4. The system was used in the first commercial product based on MCC technology: the NCR Design Advisor, developed by Robin Steele5. 1This and most other releases were company confidential.
